Job Description:

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Chief Counsel, located in XXXXX.

In this position, you will become a key member of the legal team for The Office of The Chief Counsel.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Formulating decisions and judgments with reference to resolving claims for and against the government arising out of operations of CBP.
  • Providing ethics advice; representing CBP in various third-party administrative hearings on matters such as employee discipline and adverse actions; preparing litigation reports, affidavits, and other documents to assist the Department of Justice in civil actions involving CBP;
  • Drafting, editing, and revising training materials, and other publications used to train agency law enforcement personnel, as well as performing legal research into the laws, regulations, decisions, and other precedents bearing on the legal issues involving CBP;
  • Conducting legal research, and producing written and oral legal advice in support of agency operations as part of the Office of Associate Chief Counsel (Enforcement and Operations); and
  • Providing legal training and the full range of client legal services to United States Customs and Border Protection at the United States Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, as well as in a variety of field locations in the areas of Constitutional, criminal, operational, customs, and immigration law;

Job Requirements:

  • You may be required to pass a background investigation

Qualification & Experience:

  • Specialized Education: Recent law school graduates may be appointed to attorney positions at the GS-11 level with the following additional qualifications: rank in the top 1/3 of graduating class; participation on the school’s official Law Review; membership in the Order of the Coif; or winning of a moot court competition. An interim appointment of 14 months may be made pending the selectee’s admission to the bar. Selectee will be required to provide admittance and standing to the Bar and possibly a copy of their official law school transcript.
  • Applicant must be a graduate from a full course of study in a School of Law accredited by the American Bar Association and be an active member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, the District of Columbia or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
