Job Description:

The Head of Governance, Planning and Performance is a crucial leadership role in PBST. The role would suit someone with strong experience of governance, management of risk and performance reporting. You will be able to build productive relationships with senior people, including the Director General, and apply your knowledge to support corporate decision making and delivery of our policy priorities. You will proactively identify where we can improve our corporate service offer to support senior leaders and our policy teams. You will work closely alongside other Departmental functions, including Ministry of Justice Planning and Performance, to make sure our services are aligned. The successful candidate would be an excellent line manager, providing clear direction to a team of 2 people.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor business group performance against approved plans – providing clear and timely management information and analysis to inform decision-making;
  • Coordinate annual corporate and business planning activities including drafting the annual business plan – identification of strategic business priorities and development of suitable performance measures;
  • Work with other teams in Ministry of Justice and PBST to improve the service offer to the Policy Group, providing customer feedback on planning, performance and risk processes;
  • Oversee the Group’s Information Management approach, including co-ordinating the policy response to the Covid 19 Inquiry.
  • Ensure corporate governance and related frameworks, plans and policies are integrated across all aspects of activity;
  • Support risk management arrangements across the policy group – monitoring risk and ensuring appropriate reporting and escalation mechanisms;
  • Ensure appropriate continuous professional development across the team, keeping abreast of all Departmental and best practice developments in governance, planning and performance;

Job Requirements:

  • You will have excellent strategic thinking and judgement, combined with the ability to spot and manage risk and bring solutions to problems to the Director General and other senior officials;
  • The role requires strong line management and leadership skills, particularly the ability to inspire your team, drive progress to get things done, build resilience in yourself and others and ensure high performance.
  • You will be proactive, building credibility with senior stakeholders and providing objective, pragmatic advice aligned with delivering our policy priorities;
  • You will have first class written and oral communication skills, with good attention to detail and an ability to present complex information in a simple, clear way;
  • We need someone with impeccable organisational skills, who has experience of governance, performance and planning;
