Job Description:

This position is located on ARS Plains Area – Fargo, ND – Cereal Crops Research Unit.

The primary mission of the unit is to improve quality and disease resistance of small grains (barley, wheat, durum, oat) through research on genetics, genomics, pathology, and end-use quality.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collects, organizes, and records experimental data in a form suitable for publication and future reference by others
  • Carries out measurements and analyses by applying established or modified methods; performs tests and assays
  • Schedules tasks and coordinates them with co-workers and cooperators to make optimum use of research equipment
  • Maintains records of hazardous materials use and disposal in accordance with requirements. Practices and enforces responsible safe laboratory practices; follows established safety guidelines; and disseminates safety standards to all staff
  • Performs research experiments and related duties in support of the Unit’s work to solve plant molecular biology/genetic and genomic research problems
  • Provides support and assistance for experiments in accordance with protocols and provides data for periodic laboratory reports
  • Keeps abreast of current scientific advancement by reading literature, review articles, and attending supervisor approved meetings, workshops, and conferences
  • Plans and follows experimental designs and protocols. May make recommendations for more effective research methods and procedures
  • Maintains official laboratory notebook in accordance with good laboratory practices

Job Requirements:

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Direct Deposit: Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution

Qualification & Experience:

  • Qualifying experience for the GS-11: Includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related to the position. Related degrees may include Plant Genetics, Plant Genomics, Molecular Biology or other related degrees provided they place a sufficient emphasis on plant genetics. OR A combination of doctoral level education and specialized experience as described above.
  • Qualifying experience for the GS-09: Includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. OR Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include Plant Genetics, Plant Genomics, Molecular Biology or other related degrees provided they place a sufficient emphasis on plant genetics. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.
